The system of Examination(UPSC)

A combined examination for civil services(IAS,IPS,IFS and other services) is held once in a year. In Maharashtra it is held in Mumbai,Nagpur and Aurangabad. The notification for the exam is published in the third week of December or first week of January every year in Employment News/Rozgar Samachar. Preliminary , Main Examination and Personality Test (Interview) are the three stages of the entire examination process.


I]Preliminary Examination

The first part of the examination is Preliminary Examination which is an elimination test. The syllabus for the optional subjects will be of degree level


Nature of Examination
The Preliminary examinations include 2 multiple choice type papers.A student can choose any one optional subject from list of optional subject

Paper I

General Studies
150 questions
150 Marks
Paper II
2 Hours
Optional Subjects
120 questions
300 Marks

450 Marks
Students should note that optional subject carries more marks

Negative Marking System
UPSC has now introduced negative marking system in the Prelims exam.Negative marking system means sustracting marks for wrong answers.Accordingly for every wrong answer 1/3 of the total marks alloted for the question are deducted.Hence for general studies 0.33 marks each wrong will be deducted and for optional subjects 0.83 marks will be deducted.
In case of a student marking more than one option one of these being right,that answer will not be considered valid,but, such answers will be considered for Negative Marking,i.e.marks will be deducted for such answers.If a student has not marked any option as answer i.e. he has left all the circles blank,marks will not be detected.

Date of Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Examination is usually held on the second / third Sunday in May every year.

Important Note

The Preliminary Examination prepares a foundation for Main Examination.The candidates are advised not to wait for the results of the Preliminary Examination for starting the study for the Main Examinations


II]Main Examination
The Main Examination consist of written examination and personality test.It is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates.The written examination has 9 papers of which first five papers are compulsory and next four are optional.The scope of the syllabus for the optional subjects paper is of masters degree level i.e. A level higher than bachelors degree level.In case of Engineering and Law ,level corresponds to bachelor's degree.

Structure of the Main Examination
Qualifying Papers
Paper I Qualifying Papers One of the Indian languages 300 marks
Paper II English 300 marks
The above papers are of qualifying nature only.The marks obtained in them will not count for ranking purpose.
Compulsory Subjects
Paper III Essay 200 marks
Paper IV & V General Studies(Papers I& II) 300 marks each
Optional Subjects (2 Subjects)
Paper VI & VII Optional Subject I(Papers I & II) 300 marks each
Papers VIII & IX Optional Subject II(Papers I & II) 300 marks each
Grand Total (Paper III to IX) 2000 marks

 


III]Personality Test(Interview)
The candidates coming out successfully in the written examination will be interviewed by a panel of interviewers. The interviewers will have before them a record of the career of the candidate (Biodata).Questions on matter of general interest will be asked. The interview is an assessment of intellectual qualities as well as social traits and his interest in current affairs. An attempt is made to judge some important qualities as:mental alertness,critical powers of assimilation,clear and logical exposition,balanced judgement, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership,intellectual and moral integrity.

The Final Selection
All results of UPSC civil services examinations are available on their website(www.upsc.gov.in) The students are ranked according to the total marks obtained out of 2300-sum of total marks in the main examination i.e. written and interview. These ranks decide their final selection for various services.
